Shapton ceramic sharpening stones combine extremely fast cutting action with low maintenance and less flattening. Shapton stones are created using a hardened ceramic powder suspended in a resin binder. This approach to manufacturing sharpening stones has enabled Shapton to produce a state-of-the-art product. Do not store in water. Avoid oil and grime. Simply spray with water and use. Plastic case can be used as holder when sharpening. These stones are used extensively in Japan in sharpening shears but have been reformulated for the Western market reducing the amount of water necessary for sharpening and increasing the durability for a wider range of climate. They have their own plastic holder that is convenient for storage and honing. Usually for rideline work we use just the 5000 grit or a combination of the 1500 or 2000 followed by either the 5000 or 8000 grit waterstones. To true the stones use the Shapton lapping plate ($128.99 - call to order) or use the DMT coarse diamond stone which is not as affective but is less expensive. The usual methods of truing waterstones also work such as grit or sand paper on glass and so forth. The beauty of Shapton is that you will not have to do it as frequently! |
