How to Make Your Website Work for You

This is a reprint of an article in ON THE EDGE written by Bonnie Megowan. Bonnie is not an expert on SEO (Search Engine Optimization) but this website bonika.com has consistently ranked in the top ten for all major keywords. These articles did not give critical information on the “Meta Tags” for lack of space in the publication. Here is a simple explanation of met tag optimization:

Meta Tags can be very confusing and there are individuals and companies who want to charge you lots of money to make these for you. First, what are meta tags? These are hidden attributes that your reader may not see, but the search engines see. Your software system will have something that will tell you about met tags. Here is the key, Use only words that are in your content and that you expect customers to search for and click on. The title, description and keywords are your most relevant met tags. Put those most important keywords in these areas and stay concise. The title should be 5 – 10 words, your key words limited to 10 –2 0 and the description no more than 170 characters. There are some websites like http://www.submitcorner.com/Tools/Meta/ that will generate your meta tag for you and give you other useful information.

By now, every sharpener should have a website, but they will accomplish nothing if you don’t know how to make them work for you.

A good website lets people to find you and know something about you and your services. It would also be great to sell products and or make some money directly off your website. All of this hinges on whether they can find your website in the search engines. This is called SEO or search engine optimization.

I recently attended some SEO training and found there are some simple ways to get you into the top 10 positions in Google search. First build your website with content that people will be searching for. Think about what words your customers might put in Google or Yahoo Search to find you. Put on the first page and in the title the words or phrases your customers might to look for you. Ask your friends and family for help discovering these words. Use these words in context and don’t repeat them over and over. The search engines somehow knows if you are trying to trick them and will not bring up your website in a search.

Have other websites link to you. The more websites that link to you, the higher you rank in the search engines. If there is a directory for your town, they may provide free links for you. Directories are great sources for links. Many websites will do a link exchange. If you have friends in other areas that sharpen, see if they will exchange links. If the website that links to you is relevant to what you do and if the website is popular, these will increase your rank with Google. If a website is spam or something undesirable your ranking will come down. Some companies like Bonika at www.bonika.com will set up a link that will allow you to get credit for any sales that result from your link. Links from MySpace and FaceBook will not increase your rankings, but links from other blog type sources will.

Put lots of information on your website. Write articles on how to take care of your shears or how to adjust a clipper. If you copy articles from other websites ask permission and link back to that website in the article. We encourage reprints from articles found on our website at www.bonika.com/articles.html. Write an introductory paragraph introducing the article to make your page unique. If the page is exactly the same on two websites, the ratings for both sites will go down. Google searches for unique information. This is why, if you add items to sell on your website your item description should be different than the source website. Find companies like Bonika Shears who will drop ship the items sold so that you will not have money tied up in inventory.

Change your website often. Make it a habit to make some changes or additions every day. Google will search through all the websites on the Internet in about 1/5th of a second. If your website changes rarely, you will be lower in the search engines. Changes on the front page are especially good. And speaking of the front page, keep it simple. “Flash” and other expensive fancy front pages, though pretty, actually lower you in the search engines.

Last find out what “Meta Tags” are and get yours optimized. This is a little more advanced, by doable for the novice. I have created the bonika.com website and put together all the optimizations. We come up in the top ten for all the key words and phrases that we have targeted. Take a little time each week to tweak your website and you website will become your most valuable employee working even while you sleep.
