When I sharpen in salons I have certain items I like to bring based on my personal preferences and sharpening techniques. This list should be helpful to anyone as a checklist or a trigger for things you might want to include in your sharpening case.
Selling Supplies
Business cards (with my photo on them), sharpening brochures (brochures I designed that explain my sharpening method), frequent sharpener cards, brochures on shears and other products I sell, receipts, Treo Cell phone with my contacts and software to run credit cards, a case of shears and samples of razors, irons, dryers and other products for sale. I also like to bring a business newsletter or brochure from an upcoming hair show.
Equipment
Scimech Scissor Flathone with cord, 4 flat plates with 60, 40 30 and 15 3M micron films attached by a hookit system, 3 cushioned plates with a 30, 15 and 9 micron films attached by hookit, one metal plate with a 15 micron PSA for sharpening nippers, a felt pad attached to plate, a leather pad attached to a plate, several each of 60, 40, 30, 15 and 9 3M micron film
Organizational Supplies and Accessories
Plate rack, screw holder (I use a small make-up powder jar), apron, opti-visor, table cover
Replacement Supplies
Band-Aids, finger cots (for the really big cuts), 30+ washers, 20+ screws, 30+bumpers, spray bottle of water, small spray bottle of isopropyl alcohol to disinfect and clean shears, paper towels, Puff tissue (for testing the shears), latex gloves (for testing nippers), cloth for wiping shears, jewelers cloth for polishing my sample shears
Tools
Screw driver (several sizes and types), UFO tool for the odd screw, Allen wrenches, Locktite, super glue, sponge type paint brush to clean off the whetstone, hole reamer (something to clean residual bumpers out of the bumper holed, Sharpie pen (to mark on the scissors), needle nose pliers, razor blade and/or exacto knife for trimming bumpers, alignment bar
Sharpening Stones and Pastes
5000 grit professional Shapton or 8000/4000 grit Norton Whetstone, Coarse DMT stone (to flatten the whetstone),3 diamond paddle (fine, med, coarse for nippers), pink and white hone sticks, smooth nail buffer (if you don’t know what this is for, it’s magic for final finishing!), Ookomi polish, 3 micron DiaPaste, serration file, serration plate
I usually put all this in a rolling tool box. If I am flying to shows, I streamline my equipment to the essentials and I have everything in a tool bag and carry my Scimech separate or in a rolling computer case.
